photo credit: Ordinary GuyYou probably have heard in the past, that in order to have a successful blog, the quality of your posts matter over the quantity. While in some cases it may be true, majority bloggers in order to succeed need to blog more frequently, without of course neglecting the quality. There are at two reasons why you would want to post frequently on your blog:
- You want people to subscribe to your blog. And when they do, they in a way expect you to write. That is why they have subscribed to your blog.
- Frequent posts will invite Googlebot to your blog more often.
This week, after another update of our 100 Top Real Estate Blogs, I have decided to put some interesting statistics together to find out how frequently are the new posts produced by the blogs on the list. I picked two groups of blogs: a)blogs 1 through 10; b) blogs 91 through 100. These 20 blogs collectively produced 354 posts during last week. Top ten blogs had written 312 of those posts! While the bottom 10 only 42.

Interesting Analysis. Posting frequency definitely influences readership. Thanks for the BiggerPockets mention!

Joshua,
Thanks for stopping by. BiggerPockets is one of my favorite blogs. I also think you are doing an excellent job marketing your blog and forum. Best of luck!
Thanks for the complement! I really appreciate it.
BTW – What plugin are you using for your comments? I love it! Shoot me an email if you can….
Joshua,
Here is the plugin:

Read the instructions carefully. You will need to modify or replace your comments.php file. You will need to adjust a few things to match your theme. Although here I am just using it as is. I will e-mail you the link as well just in case.

I think with 1400+ readers the question of producing quality content is obvious. But when some one is new to blogging writing a post each day can help establish the popularity of the blog. Again, neglecting the quality is never a good thing.
very interesting article and analysis….and i can confirm than, for my blog, it is true. i’ve gained more visitors simply reducing posts but increasing quality

Jay I actually agree with you on one thing . . . if a blog posts too often, I stop reading. I find it difficult to keep up and get frustrated. Curbed got removed from my reader for that exact reason.
Interesting look at this Vlad. I think there is a necessary balance between quantity, and attracting/keeping readers.
For example, I can’t keep up with Curbed. They post SO much that I have to ignore most of it. That said, it’s difficult to argue with their success. (same with TechCrunch, Mashable and other such blogs that update almost constantly.)
Another thing to note is the “group blogs”. 8 out of 10 in your Top 10 are multi-author blogs, which have an obvious advantage when it comes to quantity of posts over a single-author blog. (#9 FoREM and #10 Sellsius being the only single-author blogs in the Top 10. And up until a couple of weeks ago, Sellsius had two authors)
There’s no question though that it is difficult to sustain regular readership with infrequent posting. But I think if the quality is there, it can make up some of a lack of quantity. But, even the best written material will have difficulty keeping readership is the frequency isn’t at least 5 times a week. (my opinion only!)
It’d be interesting to see a comparison between #11 – 20 and #81 – 90 to see if the quantity difference gets smaller.

Well I guess I know what I will be doing next week. I also interested to see the difference 11-20 and 81-90 blogs.
I also think that 170 blog posts a week as little too much. If Curbed is using pigning services they are probably not benefiting for those or maybe are even banned.
The multi-author blogs definitely have an advantage maybe they should be separated into a different group…. We’ll see.
Thanks for stopping by.

You are right, quality trumps quantity, but if a quality blogger can post often, the number of readers would grow exponentially. Thank you for your time to analyze the statistics, it was a good way to confirm the idea.

First of all, thanks for the mention of UtahLuxury.com on your site.
I used to post an article a day on the site but noticed that I wanted quality over quantity. Instead of putting a new article up every day I decided to focus on making sure people would want to come back. So far so good. We are going to be changing things up a bit to allow ourselves the opportunity to post more than one a week and thus hopefully be above the #100 spot. Glad to be on the list nonetheless!
😉
Dan,
Thanks for stopping by again.
As I have mentioned elsewhere, the list has a few blogs with a definite advantage due to the multiple authors. Could a single author post 170 posts in a week? Unrealistic.
As for your website, it is completely different situation. Talk about the niche! Your website is a niche within a niche. If I were in your situation I would not worried that much about adding content as promoting your website.
And Dan,
You are no longer #100….. The list was updated since I wrote this post. Your blog is #66 now. You are definitely moving up. 😉

It can be fixed real easy- by writing a post every other day. 🙂
Sorry…. I really meant to encourage.
Brutal… Right when I’m about to bring my blog off the back burner after seeing the top 100 quote… you manage to totally and utterly crush my spirits and inspiration with a single blog post outting my recent posting frequency 😛
Couldn’t have done the old 92-100????

I said ” 😛 “
encouragement comes in many forms 🙂
There is also another side to the list. Many of the blogs are actually written by real estate agents. I use to be one and I know that sometimes there is simply no time or you can be just too tired to write post. I still hope the list will bring you a visitor or two.

vlad,
Great blog and thanks for mentioning our site.
Your content is fresh and a good change of pace by “going beyond MLS.” I look forward to spending a Friday afternoon going through your previous articles.
btw, AHB has linked back to you.
Best regards,

I recently started a blog discussing my actual real estate developments and investments including lessons learned and financial results. Thankfully, I didn't read your post prior to starting the blog. How can a single author ever keep up? Thanks for the data, but I may want to remain ignorant for awhile longer!

Terry,
If you are serious about blogging, you can achieve great results buy posting a few posts a week, if you can’t post at least daily. There are some great blogs out there that do not publish often but enjoy great authority.
It is hard to compete with multi author blogs.
